Lou Dobbs CNN Crew: The Magpies of Media

The journo-tainment industry may not be factually relevant or inspire an intellectual curiosity … but it sure does sell soap powder and create a compulsion to stay tuned.  After all, when Lou Dobbs says he will be right back to smirk about how pathetic Congress is … right after the toilet bowl cleaner commercial … one may very well be compelled to not miss a single  of his latest diatribe.  It is this scat singing /  “s” talking that has so attracted droves of viewers to become a part of the ‘not-a-clue’ forum. And no one needs a clue – because this isn’t an exchange of informatoin – it is battleground of emotion.

With the precision of a military drill team, people without a working knowledge of our government or history begin to talk, argue and even publish their criticisms on the subject.  You can always spot the chronically uninformed.  They are precisely what you need if you are casting extras for a riot scene in a film.  They are noisy, ostensibly without direction and even though they are talking or shouting, it is impossible to discern what it is they are saying … however … they’re common bond is fear.

Lou Dobbs, the Eddie Haskell of journo-tainment,  has the easiest job in broadcast history.  It is difficult to perceive that he does any personal research.  His journalism requires sniping from a high altitude and then surrounding himself with people that are very glad for the evenings’ wages.  They don’t actually disagree with him as he criticizes anything and everything.  Dobbs and company rarely recommend any risky alternative.  In fact, even their criticisms don’t seem to be able to endure a  junior high school debate team’s scrutiny.

He smirks and hrrmmphs at world calamities as though he were in the cafeteria with cohorts ridiculing one of the less stylin’ teachers.  Flanked by terminally partisan hacks that have managed to get paying gigs as “S” talking chorus members – there are no actual facts.  Instead, Dobbs and his compatriots all over the dial, frame their opinion as though it were in actuality, representative of facts – but these are fact-free diets of mostly fiction with nary a scintilla of fiber.

Yesterday, while at the gym working out, I tuned my headset to the CNN broadcast with Lou Dobbs.  It was just what I needed to do another set even though my arms were fatigued.  The roundish honest faced broadcaster repeated the words “largest transfer of wealth” three times without ever considering the fact that if tax payer money was moving towards job creation the operative term would be “transferring back.”  On the same broadcast, comments about John McCain’s objections about long-term investment in Broad-band infrastructure was unacceptable without recollecting that only a matter of months ago, John McCain promoted the idea as second only to Green initiatives in its job creating  potential in order to help the economy.  Singing back up was Ed Rollins, a political consultant with no political consulting gigs, yet he gets to peddle is head-shaking admonishments as they are needed.  His role is color commentary and additional head shaking while agreeing with Lou Dobbs disagreement.  The ball is often passed with the instructive – “right?”

At least the Magpies didn’t have tele-prompters.  They also didn’t pose as anything but trouble makers.  They didn’t prance around with turkey feathers to wet our appetites, but they would close the glass door on the poor sap while distracting him.  They constantly gave commentary – but never called themselves commentators.  Is one a commentator when sitting in the bleachers screaming “throw da’ bum out !!! ??

The list of these Journo-tainers is without end as are the stories they broadcast.  It is a serialization of the news designed to sell products and advertising by dramatically creating a series of vignettes that give the viewer a sense that they are actually engaged in reasoned discourse, while in actuality it is a dramatic rendering of the days events with incredible license.

McCain Campaign and the Fat Lady Warming-up in the Wings

McCain Curing Insomnia

Most Republicans I spoke to weren’t expecting an amazing speech.  Just a competent one. They were shocked at how bad it was.

CNN’s <click for video> Jeffrey Toobin, the only ‘press’ voice we heard that felt sufficiently distanced from the Twin Cities’ police departments to speak freely, expressed what we discovered was the most common observation about John McCain’s speech in St Paul last night.  In short – Worst ever !  After an early morning discussion with a few professional colleagues that were leaning toward McCain, as traditional Republican voters, expressed that they no longer felt comfortable with McCain because of the speech and his awkward self-promotion as a POW.  It was not surprising – the Palin pick for VP had begun the downward spiral among my Republican acquaintances, only further exacerbated by the dismissive and disrespectful tone of her speech.  More of the same from Romney – Giuliani and Thompson did not help matters among the group of Republicans to whom I regularly speak.  In fact, in unison, they described Republican leadership and thoughtfulness as abysmal and expressed a willingness to give Democratic leaders a shot, providing they don’t resemble their predecessors or the Republican rhetoric about them.

In actuality, the bar was already very low for McCain.  The bar has traditionally been very low for John McCain.  Most Republicans I spoke to weren’t expecting an amazing speech.  Just a competent one. They were shocked at how bad it was.  I wasn’t.  There has been a laissez faire approach to McCain by the press that has served to be gentle on him, although at the risk of not being truthful.

Heroes Are People Too

as relevant to the complicated leadership challenges ahead – as a Ouija board and a case of Bud.

Apparently the press and public has never been able to successfully criticize John McCain without appearing to disrespect a former P.O.W.   Not since Audie Murphy’s screen test has anyone successfully done combat with a war hero without risking censure for being un-American.  It is an immunity that is naturally bestowed on American’s that have served heroically in the military.  This immunity does not apply to civilian heroes for longer than a news cycle.

John McCain’s handlers obviously reacting to criticisms of McCain speeches inducing mass spontaneous narcolepsy across the American landscape – decided to provide him with some less empty words.  Unfortunately, McCain speaking in laudatory terms about himself is an old story.  He’s been telling us of his bravery for many years and it no longer provides a sufficient blind from his lack of logic, diplomatic skill or severely lacking cognitive thinking.   While his heroism is an American story, it is as relevant to the complicated leadership challenges ahead – as a Ouija board and a case of Bud.

Ironing Out the Press

If presidential elections are political theater – the McCain campaign is a game of charades…

Perhaps fearing retribution after trumpeting complaints about the press from the podium while the twin cities police provided rhythm, using actual ‘reporters’ as drums – the press seemed muted in their observations.  Of course, if the bar were set any lower for former-POW John McCain, it would appear to be a line drawn on the ground.

Nevertheless, Republican stalwarts could be seen peppered across the landscape of terrestrial and cable shows cheering “less is more” as a mantra.  Still though, while an interesting concept, it is not the manner of the McCain life-style, it hasn’t been the manner of the McCain legacy and it is a weak attempt at explaining McCain’s uninspiring speaking style and his weakness in critical thinking.  While these observations aren’t an indictment of McCain as a human being – he seems the least likely champion of Republicans that have previously called for his head on a stick.  If presidential elections are political theater – the McCain campaign is a game of charades after Thanksgiving dinner, the clues and messages unclear and at times – irrelevant.

Polluting the Electorate with Negativism

Rudy Giuliani risks electrocution in his spittle splattered microphoned rebuke

The messages are weak and in conflict.  The VP pick is meant to obscure vision and criticism of McCain.  McCain has never looked more frail or disassociated with his surroundings.  The campaign and Republican rhetoric with endless chants of U-S-A are disturbing in historical symbolism and inference.  In fact, the Republican leadership has done more in 13 years to disgrace the American Flag – the mere claim of stewardship is infuriating – a history of praising the symbol while crushing actual Americans and desimating our economy.  All while a very unconvincing group of shills cheer an overplayed hand and ad hominem attacks on Democratic challengers.  It is inconceivable that there is a market for what the Republicans have peddled during this convention.

The air feels heavy in the room while watching the scores of people, acting excited while they distance themselves from reason and purpose, feasting on a diet of empty promises – the table set by the very same promoters that sold George Bush as a great leader, while they picked the American pocket clean.  Americans, actual Americans, fist pumping and chanting U-S-A as though they were at an international swim meet.  Incredibly trying to claim the U.S. Flag as the property of the Republican party – while Rudy Giuliani risks electrocution in his spittle splattered microphoned rebuke of Barack Obama and his admonishment that Democrats didn’t speak of 9/11 enough – Mitt Romney heaping on more of the same, while echoes of Fred Thompson’s throat clearing and coughing still resonate in the great hall.

“Mi mi mi mi” Meanwhile, the warm-ups can be heard from the Diva’s dressing room as her dressers cram her into a tent sized gown.

Ferraro, Wright and Wrong (And Crazy Uncle Nunzio)

Ferraro

“… she’s handling her embarrassment in a profoundly unflattering way…”

Geraldine Ferraro shot off her mouth, whether contextually correct or incorrect, she has to account for her words.  Whether that means she gets more speaking engagments or less club dates at the AEI Speakers Bureau, we can’t say.  But we can say that any press is gferraro.jpggood press if you talk for a buck, and among other things – she does.  All of her comments were said in broad daylight – not on a dark muddy country road.

We don’t agree with her sentiment or her insistence that she’s being unduly targeted.  that she’s handling her embarrassment in a profoundly unflattering way is her own doing and product of her personality.  She’s decided to defend her awkward and very obscure metaphor instead of simply saying – I meant no offense and didn’t really express myself the way one would expect a ‘Paid Professional Speaker.  Anyone that thinks Geraldine Ferraro deserves to called a racist is way off.  That here words could be considered racist and offensive is another matter.  Politics, her dangerous profession of choice, provided the venue for misunderstanding.  We think she should have known better and simply sit down and take a brief time out.  She’s now a liability to all Americans because her words are being broadcast all over the world as Ugly America.

Wright

“… the headline is actually uglier than the story…”

Reverend Wright also talks for a buck – so to speak.  You can call it a lot of things, and one can give all the money away – but talking for a buck is still talking for a buck.  Brian Ross’s ABC Investigative Team “uncovered” this story from broad daylight.   Rev. Wright echoed partly the sentiments of over 60% of Americans.  CNN is covering , FOX will do their thing, as will the NYT, Wall Street Journal and anything else that will turn a buck. Bloomberg will be in there and then Time and Newsweek will bat clean-up. Sure, the headline that ABC used were infact his words, but so were Marc Antony’s when he said “Brutus is an honorable man.wright”  We think it was already controversial and risky that he opted to preach with a profound negative.  Nonetheless, it was his decision.

What is more disturbing is that the headline is actually uglier than the story – and that’s what puts the pizzazz, the smack, the sizzle in the story.  Our guess is that Brian Ross had nothing to do with the title.  The story itself is very fair – but the editor or editors that selected the title -that’s how you get news profits.  Nonetheless, the Reverend needs to take a lesson from the ‘Ferraro v. Ego’ bout and just take a time out.  Is it possible?  We don’t know. What we do know is that Democrats – single handedly, have just handed the Bloated Right Wing Hate machine enough material for the next month of broadcasts.  C’est la D!

Wrong

“… Olbermann did one of those overreactions last night … “

We think that the continous overreaction is fruitless.  Sure, someone says something olbermann.jpgagainst our ‘choice’ and we’re all noise and shaking fists. MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann did one of those overreactions last night on his broadcast at ‘Countdown.’   At the risk of annoying the Olbermann fans – his commentary was pure nonsense and further support of the corporate media’s love affair with the Bloodsport of Politics.   It just jumps into the game as defined by the opposition.  This hyper-emotional display in place of intellectual analysis and reasoned discourse is submission to the business of hate – not enlightenment.

This is not a discussion about the shredding of the American Constitution, this is one of the Freedoms of the American Constitution – a free election with all it’s strengths and weaknesses.  This is not about the coup of our White House and the leaders selling the furniture to foreign governments – this is about Americans trying to get to the White House to take back our government.  Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama are going to be the Democratic nominee for President.  We think you should keep that in mind and not drag either of them down the rabbit hole.  The fight is ugly enough.

Crazy Uncle Nunzio on Keith Olbermann

“… you lose your perspective and become a meaninglsess brawler !”

“Hey Olbermann, you’re a smart kid – Bring back the intellectual commentary please? Rise above the smoke an tell us what’s happening … don’t roll up your sleeves and start swinging with the rest of them – you lose your perspective and become a meaninglsess brawler !  There’s plenty of volunteers for that game.”

Uncle Nunzio knows.  He’s a big fan.  He catches all your grammatical errors, malapropisms and loves the way you want to be an intellectual newsman.

He says, “Being a newsman means more than just using a line from Edward R. Morrow!  You’ve got to lose that expression on your face like your mother made you eat the brussells sprouts.  Then get that feeling out of your gut.”  He continued, ” You can give your opinion without a tantrum.  You’re playing their game – not yours.   Play your game.  Keep at it kid !”

Lou Dobbs: Challenges Ivory Tower’s – No, No, No … Not the “R” Word

LouDobbs_2Notwithstanding the fact that we are still very confused by Lou Dobbs’ stand on immigration, or for that matter, interpretations of his stand on immigration – we are very much heartened by CNN’s Dobbs publicly challenging Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein. – and calling him out to debate the matter of “inflation” and the economy in general. Indicating by his invitation that Blankfein will be served as lunch.

Clearly a proponent of the G.W. Bush’s close-your-eyes-and-you-won’t-see-the-monster’ style of leadership, Blankfein is noted of late to having dismissed claims, including Lou Dobbs’ assessment that the economy is tanking. There is a reason for this silly refrainLloyd_Blankfein_Goldman from the orthodox rightist regime. Out of control Federal Debt – defensible. Gasoline at $4.00 a gallon – explainable. Inflaming inflation – arguable. However, using terms that depict precisely the state of the economy – TANKING – Outrageous! Blasphemous! Unpatriotic! Besides the fact that it is true. This is a danger signal that the most treacherous Karl Rove tactics; the most deceitful Dick Cheney misinformation; and the most disturbing malapropisms by the current Natural Born US Citizen President – cannot provide the necessary distractions. The middle class taxpayer is looking askance at the destruction the GOP has delivered to Americans and the United States, and they are armed with their vote in record numbers.

Neo-Conservatives Call on the Masters of Illusion

So the conference calls, the private calls, the emails, the nudging, the winking, and the whispers among the Illuminati lead, otherwise, reasonably intelligent and successful individuals, to be pressed into service for the cause of their ‘brothers-in-ideology.’ The ungrateful masses are expected to imagine reality is really a box of chocolates, even though material matters have begun to demonstrate the properties of inertia. To wit, the equal and opposite reactions of reckless economic policy, feckless domestic policy (with regards to people and places) and foreign policies that seem as though they have been ripped from poorly written fiction.

We recently witnessed the CEO of one of the globe’s largest financial machines, Goldman Sachs; speak with a similar smugness of America’s President. None of the White House team wants this word ‘recession” to be used anywhere. “Recession” is a word likely to sink the GOP faster than John McCain’s on-going (and very sad) battle with reality. What to do, send out the political troops, be they from Corporate Boards Rooms or in Congress, just like Blankfein, or his Congressional counterpart, professional Republican slime-thrower Representative Jack Kingston – (R-GA). Get the White House talk-radio action team like Sean Hannity and Bill Cunningham to disperse disinformation, Glen Beck. Take your pick from the conservative talk radio list and you will find incredible similarities in the words-of-the-day. If one were from another planet, it would be impossible to surmise that the US Government had been under sole GOP stewardship for six years prior to and including all of 2006.

Middle Grounders Awaken

Perhaps all the political strategists have missed the biggest point. The middle grounders, the ones that take the heat, pay the most taxes, provide the most productivity, buy the soap powder and formerly were the backbone of military, don’t believe the story anymore. More and more people are finally realizing that the theocrats, neo-cons and reckless corporatists posing as visionaries and pillars of ethics and humanity have truly been lying to the American public, misleading true patriots and pilfering our Nation’s wealth by creating another class of slavery.

This time the slave master is the corporate banking cartel in concert with the energy brokers. One does not need to be a clairvoyant in order to realize what has happened. All one needs to do look at the government spending money on a credit card for seven straight years. The credit card is co-signed by the American people. The current chapter of US history began seven years ago with money in the bank and great credit. Today … we are in severe debt and our credit has been discounted. Seven years ago … the mid-grounders were feeling hopeful. Today …we need economic stimulus packages in order to quell a riot on the White House with otherwise reasonable people, storming the gates looking for Bush – Cheney, chanting cries of traitor and criminal, seeking their heads on sticks.

Blankfein will be a No-Show

They will not permit Lloyd B. to accept the challenge from Dobbs. There’s no upside for anyone on his team … certainly not Goldman Sachs, definitely not the White House (they already have enough renegade talkers over there that don’t have a clue) and clearly not the Republican National Committee which is going to have a wholesale consumer revolt on their hands, less the enslaved gerrymandered political appellations , come this November.

Election Results – Okay – But the Commentary Doesn’t Make Any Sense

binx101-1282.jpgWhat are they talking about ?? I’m actually still sitting watching some of the primary results from our comfortable home in Northern California, yet I’m whisked away into a rabbit hole as I listen to the commentary. Chris Matthews: “It seems that the debates impact the trend lines ?” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is spinning in his grave as if on a rotisserie, rebuking his creation Sherlock Holmes, as the cosmos is filled with the myth shattering frankness of Matthews’ observation. And this is only an hors d’eouvre. The main course is a work of fiction without a plot. Only two voices in the entire broadcast speak with some meaningful observation – Rachel Maddow and Tom Brokaw. The only two that don’t seem as though they are auditioning for an announcer spot at the Kentucky Derby. The only two that spoke about strategy and weren’t interested in the polling numbers versus the actual primary results or projected winners. The only two that didn’t look like they were measuring each word based on stage directions.

Then there’s ‘apparent projected winner’ – versus – ‘projected winner.’ This, obviously drummed up by the legal team at Rockefeller Center. Wait there’s more. Matthews: “Senator McCaskill, what does it mean to you that Senator Obama is the ‘Projected,’ sorry, ‘Apparent Projected Winner’ in Missouri. <uncomfortable pause> McCaskill: “Er … ah … it means that Senator Obama is doing as we expected <uncomfortable shifting on heels>. Keith Olbermann: “Senator, is their any apparent reason, any question, any concern that Senator Obama is ready for the job of President of the United States on day one?” Clinton campaign associate director also sharing the interview jumps in and says “Hillary is ready day one. ” I’m checking to make sure that I haven’t nodded off and dreamed some of this dialog. No such luck. McCaskill works hard to not scratch her head and responds with anything that would prevent her from looking at the camera while shaking her head in amazement.

I’m not sure what they are talking about. Super-duper-Tuesday, now a television event seems to be the only driving force.

Hold it, Chuck Todd, NBC political director actually shows a little math and rationale about the delegate count. Now at least this is a little bit encouraging, since this is all about the Super Delegates if the race is split in the manner it seems on the Democratic side. Never mind – Howard Fineman is now on the screen speculating and it’s having the effect of a sedative. Just more silly words like the one’s I’m writing now. What happened to Todd, he was making sense.
From the looks of things, Matthews’ has been exorcised by the NBC brass and isn’t spitting all over the microphone, but he does seem to be playing Lou Costello to Olbermann’s Bud Abbott.

I don’t know – Third Base.

Hold the phone – CNN – they are actually showing the results and what it means in terms of delegates and what it could mean at the convention. Uh-oh, Larry King is chiming in … that’s okay … they have Larry, we have crazy Uncle Nunzio. At least Larry wears pants.

Fox – well … now at least they sound like fiction. It’s apparent they’re just talking. The clue was using the term – ‘McCain’s surge’. That’s just wrong for so many reasons. I need to go to bed. Apologies tomorrow.
